When sexual behavior becomes problematic and continues despite adverse consequences it is
called sex addiction. The term sex addiction first appeared in the early 1980's with the
publication of Out of the Shadows, a landmark text, written by Dr. Patrick Carnes, a leader
and pioneer in the recovery field. Addictive sexual behaviors have serious consequences which
may include severe depression, suicidal thoughts, profound shame, despair, anxiety, huge losses,
intense loneliness, jail and death.
